Yoga is gaining popularity as a viable workout option in the United States and as such, there are more stores that are carrying yoga workout equipment such as mats and bags. After people have attended a few yoga classes, they usually have to choose to start renting out the yoga mats provided by the gym they go to, or they need to go out and buytheir own yoga mat. As such, there are many different choices in yoga mats, varying in materials used, colors, designs and features.
Types of Mats
Rubber yoga mats are the most common and usually the least expensive yoga mats on the market today. Many of these mats can be found at any store that carries workout equipment and usually run between fifteen and sixty dollars. Although the majority of these yoga mats come in synthetic rubber material, there are some that use recycled materials or a natural rubber so that they are more environmentally friendly.
For those that want to spend a little more money on a yoga mat, there are cotton yoga mats on the market. Some of these cotton yoga mats require that a thin rubber yoga mat is laid beneath it to prevent slippage. Others have their own non-slipping material built in so that all that is needed is the cotton yoga mat, which is filled with all natural cotton fibers and has a case that is also of all cotton material. These mats are usually easy to clean, being able to be placed in the wash to get out the sweat and bacteria that can accumulate on yoga mats. These cotton yoga mats usually start at around eighty dollars, depending on if they are made of all natural cotton fibers or not. There are also cotton yoga mat kits that include massage equipment as well and can run over two hundred dollars, which is quite the investment.
The purpose of a good yoga mat is two-fold, whether it is a rubber or cotton yoga mat: the yoga mat helps to hold the person's hands and feet in place while doing the various poses so that they do not have to readjust, and it also provides some cushion to the person's body so that the floor poses do not have to be done on a hard floor. Most yoga mats are not much more than a half inch thick since some of the yoga poses are balancing poses which are difficult to do on a highly padded surface.
