Yoga is becoming a more popular means of obtaining exercise, flexibility, and relaxation. Although most yoga is done in a yoga studio which may be a stand alone studio or part of a full exercise gym, there are also some yoga DVDs on the market that are quite good and allow individuals to do their yoga in the comfort of their own homes and in theirown time. Whether the yoga is done in a studio or at home, there is always a need for a yoga mat, which can quickly be seen after a few minutes into the first class as hands and feet start to slide or the tail bone starts hurting in certain poses.
The purpose of a yoga mat is to prevent this slippage from happening, providing a slightly sticky and cushioned surface for the hands and feet. Usually yoga mats are not very thick, only about a half inch thick usually, so that the balancing can be done without interference of too thick a surface which makes it difficult to balance. Although they are not very thick, they do provide much needed padding from the hard surface of the floor so that the work that is done and held on the floor is more comfortable and does not cause bruising to certain tender parts of the body.
Choosing a Mat
Rubber yoga mats are the most common in stores today, being found even in stores that do not specialize in workout equipment. Most of these rubber yoga mats are made of synthetic materials which are not earth friendly, but do the job well, often coming with their own carrying bag or sling. They are also not very expensive so that people new to yoga do not have to make a large investment to get started, costing only about fifteen dollars for a mat and a strap.
For those that want to be more earth friendly but still like to use rubber yoga mats, there are mats that are made from all recycled materials. In addition, there are also rubber yoga mats that are made of natural rubber and do not have latex or other synthetic materials in them. These rubber yoga mats come in a variety of colors and designs to match most personalities, and often have matching yoga mat bags that either come with them or can be bought to match. For people who are concerned over bacteria buildup on the mats, there are also antimicrobial rubber yoga mats that help to prevent this situation and keep them cleaner and healthier to use.
